Woodcutters for Wildlife

IMG_4983aThe volunteer group Clevedon Woodcutters for Wildlife was founded in 1994 by conservationist and former Clevedon Tree Warden Fred Quinney. Their original mission was the  coppicing and thinning of trees in Norton’s Wood on the Clevedon Court estate to maintain a succession of wildlife habitats, hence the chosen name ‘Woodcutters’.

In 2000 they laid out the Millennium Orchard (now also called the Community Orchard) off Brookfield Walk and two years later planted 2,500 native trees and shrubs to create a new piece of woodland between the Blind Yeo river and Davis Lane, now successfully established and named Quinney’s Wood after their founder.

The Woodcutters frequently work on Poets’ Walk, suporting the Friends group there,  and have assisted North Somerset Council and the MARLENS in work at Clevedon’s Marine Lake.

Since autumn 2015 they have also had an active role in the management of Dial Hill, in collaboration with North Somerset Council.

Volunteers with Woodcutters for Wildlife can enjoy an all-year-round variety of practical, outdoor tasks including woodland and grassland management, tree planting, scrub control and orchard care.

All necessary instruction, hand tools and insurance cover are provided.

Working parties are held every Wednesday morning 09:30-12:00 at various venues in Clevedon.

To see examples of the work we do go to our monthly diary.
